A very fast read, The Social Affair takes a satirical look at our tech obsessed society and how things online are not always what they seem.
Each chapter alternates between two different characters: Josie and Izzy. Josie is married to a powerful man, Grant. A plastic surgeon, Grant is able to provide a life of luxury for his family and Josie is all to happy to post picture after picture of their seemingly fairy tale life to her Instalook page. Izzy is a broke, single, coffee shop employee who spends all of her time obsessing over Josie’s Instalook account and spends all her money trying to emulate her. To put it simply: Izzy wants Josie’s life, husband and all.
I read this novel very quickly, I really couldn’t put it down. Each character seemed to sink lower and lower as the story moved on and I couldn’t wait to find out how they were all going to effect and hurt each other. I thought the obsession with social media was so spot on and took a raw look at what things are capable of escalating to if we let them.
The Social Affair is the first in a series, the second is called The Replacement Wife. I actually read both titles, but not in order. I would recommend reading them in order, but it is not absolutely necessary. Some of the characters overlap but I was able to enjoy reading the first book second and nothing was ruined for me. I rate this one 4 out of 5 stars and I really hope a book three is in the works!
