Wow! This thriller blew me away! Kudos to Cate Hollahan for writing a truly unique story that keeps the reader always on their toes!
Lies She Told is a novel like one I’ve never read before. It follows Liza Cole, a washed up author penning her next romantic thriller. Each chapter in Lies She Told is split into two sections. The first section is the actual novel that our lead character is writing. The second part of the chapter follows Liza’s real life. She is dealing with infertility and is taking experimental hormone drugs. Meanwhile, her husband David is under stress at work: his partner and best friend Nick is missing. With Nick gone, David has to pick up the slack. With all the stress, David is not a very supportive spouse and Liza finds herself wondering if he even wants to have a baby at all. As she becomes more and more distraught in real life, her novel becomes increasingly thrilling and Liza is seeing more similarities than usual between her real life and the made up life she is writing about. Suddenly, the character on the page turns from mousy to fierce, and Liza realizes she and her character might be one and the same.
I really don’t have anything bad to say about this one. I was so delighted to read a novel with such a unique story like nothing I’ve ever read before. If there’s another book out there like this one, I haven’t read it. I was so sucked in to both stories: the fictional story and the main character’s story and I couldn’t put this book down. I love the idea of a book within a book and when the two stories collided, the intensity was crazy! Two stories in one may sound somewhat confusing but I can assure you that it is not, Hollohan did a wonderful job organizing her distinctive tale, and Lies She Told puts the psycho in psychological thriller! Well done, excellent book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 stars!
